Privately owned, leaving them free to make big decisions and take risks. Just the kind of go-go place you would expect to run with this. People think the microcomputer biz began exclusively with garage start ups such as Apple and Microsoft. It did to a large extent, but the money came from established venture capitalists and many of the players were mid-sized companies such as Radio Shack, with its Trash-80. It could'a been a contenda.
