They still are in Japan. Prof. Ikegami once brought me to one. He said a
small exposure is good for you. He also said they did extensive tests in
their lab, exposing rats and fish to tritium at levels well above those
allowed for humans. They found no problems at all.

Many of the standards seem somewhat arbitrary. They pick round numbers. The
Japanese government abruptly raised several of the allowed exposure levels
after Fukushima. If they hadn't, they would have to abandon an even larger
area.

I believe ~90,000 people have evacuated, more or less permanently. For 30
years, anyway.
