                I love stories like this! ... After the superconducting
supercollider was abandoned...

                

                Then you will probably love this sequel. In 2006, trucking
magnate JB Hunt, one of the most hated men in America (among his competitors
in the industry) due to perceived political payoffs and assorted rip-offs
(but admired by others) - stepped forward and bought the superconducting
supercollider complex for just $6.5 million in the hope of turning it into
the largest data storage facility in America. He was a man of vision, if
nothing else.

                The complex had cost the taxpayers $2 billion to that stage,
when it was cancelled. Then, in December of that year, less than six months
after investing, zillionaire Hunt slipped on a patch of ice, broke his skull
and died - to the amazement of critics who thought that a head that hard
could not be broken. 

                SS's future as a giant wormhole under Texas was thrown into
limbo, and eventually the project was shelved. Haunting photos are here -
