Mandrake 8.0 and 8.1 use XFree 4.1.0 and default to framebuffer mode. To use a non framebuffer mode, choose linux-nonfb in your bootloader. If you have changed your bootloader's configuration and cannot follow my directions, the difference between linux and linux-nonfb is that linux-nonfb does not pass a vga= kernel parameter.
Mandrake 8.2beta1 (which I am beta testing on my computer) has the same deal with framebuffer mode, but it uses XFree86 4.2.0. (XFree reports its release date as January 18, 2002) Under Mandrake 8.1, I observed this problem occuring bi-weekly (or even less frequently than that) with my ATI Rage 128 Pro card, but I haven't seen it happen under Mandrake 8.2 yet (bear in mind that I've only been beta testing Mandrake 8.2 for about a week.) > --- ORIGINAL MESSAGE --- > Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 16:56:59 -0800 > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [vox-tech] ******* Video card.... > From: Peter Jay Salzman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > ryan, > > i'm not extremely familiar with this chipset, but i was under the > impression that official patches to the xfree86 cvs were *just* added > a few weeks ago. > if you're not using 4.2.*, you may want to try upgrading (not familiar > with mandrake either, sorry). > > begin Ryan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > > what chipset? which laptop? > > > > Compaq Armada V300, ATI Rage Mobile (Don't know exactly, if you tell me how > > to look it up I will) > > > > > are you using a frame buffer console? if so, try using a real console. > > > maybe the chipset is breaking under a change of graphics context. > > > > I don't think so, I'm not sure, It's whatever mandrake 8.0 is using by > > default, again, i'm not sure how to find out. > > > > > [SNIP - Occasionally, X gets stuck switching to a vc, and requires reboot] _______________________________________________ vox-tech mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.lugod.org/mailman/listinfo/vox-tech
