Hey folks, The Ad Committee for Academic Freedom at Columbia is a coalition of students, professors, allies and community members who've come together to respond to the attacks on Columbia Professors, particularly, the MEALAC Dept and Prof. Massad. We're having a press conference and speak out on Tues, Dec 7th btwn 12-2, and we hope that people will join us. We are also asking for endorsements by groups on the points and demands listed below. We affirm the right of all professors and students to voice their opinions and dissent 2. We condemn all forms of discrimination including anti-Semitism, anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia. 3. We condemn all examples of intimidation in the university. 4. The recent charges against Columbia professors are not illustrative of intimidation or anti-Semitism. They are rather an attack on academic freedom by politically motivated actors such as the David Project, a right wing Zionist project without interest in truly open debate. 5. The film "Unbecoming" was released in the context of a broader attack on dissenting opinions and civil liberties and it draws from the general rise of discrimination against Arabs and Muslims. Demands 1. Columbia University must defend Professor Massad and other victimized professors. 2. We demand that Columbia University provide an environment in which Professor Massad can teach his course, Palestinian and Israeli Politics and Societies. 3. An external political body vetting an academic institution is the definition of censorship. We call on city councilmember Michael Nelson to drip his proposed investigation. 4. We defend freedom of speech at Columbia University. 5. We oppose politically motivated investigations and we demand that President Bollinger drop the investigation of the MEALAC department immediately. ------------------------ Yahoo!
