Yes for soldiers

The Burlington City Council deserves credit for voting 12-1 to place Iraq referendum question 7 on the March 1 ballot: "Shall the voters of the City of Burlington advise the President and Congress that Burlington and its citizens strongly support the men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces in Iraq and believe that the best way to support them is to bring them home now?"

The Washington Post reported on its front page Feb. 9 that the Iraq war is affecting Vermont in a big way: "Vermont has the most deaths in Iraq per capita" and "the second highest mobilization rate per capita" of any state. Vermonters have earned the right to tell Bush to declare victory and get out.

All excuses for attacking Iraq were false. No weapons of mass destruction. No links to 9/11. The occupation is destroying, not rebuilding.

This war is about grabbing control of oil. Oil is why the U.S. built 14 permanent military bases in Iraq. Bush gave false reasons because he knew Americans would not support sacrificing our soldiers in a war for oil.

To truly support our soldiers and their families, vote "yes" on question 7 to bring them home now.
