Former Ambassador and US Representative to Address Vermont Writers

Richard Swett, former Ambassador to Denmark and former Representative to the US House of Representatives from New Hampshire, is also an architect and the author of the newly published Leadership by Design: Creating an Architecture of Trust. He will be speaking on the theme of  Leadership and Advocacy in the Creative Professions at the annual meeting of the Vermont chapter of the National Writers Union on Sunday, June 26th at Langdon Street Cafe in Montpelier at 3 p.m.

“Vermont is a leader in using design to improve the quality of life of the state’s residents,” says Swett. “It is very appropriate to be speaking about leadership from the design community in a place that does it so well. Too few people know the rich tradition of design leadership our nation possesses and fewer still put it to good practice. Speaking about Leadership by Design in such an environment can only make the discussion all the more inspiring.”

Gerard Colby, President of the NationalWriters Union and a Vermont resident, will follow Ambassador Swett with a brief overview of conditions in the publishing industry and the impact on writers. He will also answer questions about how freelance writers may be able to file a claim in a recent $18 million class action settlement against large media corporations for electronic piracy of copyrighted works.

NOTE: THE ENTIRE EVENT RUNS FROM 1:30 to 5 PM

Other presenters will discuss the impact of the internet and other new technologies on writers' work, including literary blogging, print-on-demand publishing, and teleseminars for book promotion.
