The Continued Annexation of the Occupied West Bank: The Myths of the Security Barrier and the Disengagement Plan A talk & slideshow by Hilary Martin and S'ra DeSantis Free! All Welcome! Israel's annexation wall, ostensibly for the security of Israeli citizens, began construction in 2002 and is rapidly nearing completion. Eighty percent of the wall is being built on land within the West Bank, which Israel has occupied for almost forty years. The massive system of wall and fence, where finished, is proving to have a dire effect on the Palestinian civic, economic, and cultural life, and it has already destroyed some of the most fertile land in the region in the wake of its construction. Hilary and S'ra will share their experiences from their visits to the West Bank and discuss the "facts on the ground" created by the wall. They will explore the parallels of the wall's construction with the continued settlement expansion in the West Bank, and place these developments within the context of the much-heralded disengagement from still-occupied Gaza. Hilary and S'ra are vegetable farmers with the Diggers' Mirth Collective Farm in Burlington's Intervale. They are members of Vermonters for a Just Peace in Palestine/Israel. Hilary serves on the board of the Peace and Justice Center.
