As for the remote parking safety issues: As a frequent traveller to remote areas, both for work and fun, I have adopted a little technique passed along by one of my more creative co-workers. I usually try to leave a handgun case and box of shell casings on the seat of the truck when I will be away for a while. The gun case can be had for just a few $$ - even if you don't own a handgun you can find one at a garage sale or discount sporting goods store. The shell casings came from one of my buddies that had a bunch of empties still in the box. I really don't know if it works as a deterrent, but have had no trouble in remote areas (knock on wood).
