This list has a tradition of being fiercely opposed to any posts that have a commercial motive or message.

I don't think anyone here has a problem with posts about a special sale, a source for some gear or materials, or a personal impressions or preferences favoring one line or product over another.

But the question of personal gain seems to be what clouds things and starts to make some posts seem more commercial than merely personal opinion.

We all know Leland and respect his depth of experience, knowledge and willingness to share it with any who would but ask. But Leland also works at Patrick's and his employer gets a chunk of the $150 fee for the steelheading class he pointed Mark towards.

At the risk of getting into a hair-splitting debate about what constitutes an 'overt' commercial message, I wonder how others feel about receiving any kind of self-serving posts from this list? Are messages like Jack Cook's, Leland's or Al Peterson's valuable to you or are they just a less intrusive form of spam?

Might be a good idea if we all knew what the ground rules are here.

This discussion is not heading towards steelheading. Not trying to be a
flame nazi, but if you guys want to continue this discussion, please

That is from the same person that posted this concerning an ad:

If others on this list wish to receive advertising outside of this

newsgroup from REI, fine. I, for one, do not and do not appreciate

your using this newsgroup to further your employer's business.

Thank you,

Leland.

I see no reason why not. It was a specific answer to a specific
question and was not "trolling" for business. Allen Peterson replied
to a hook search question. Websites were posted for European sea-trout
 vacations etc.
