Well, nobody FedEx'd any green woolley buggers in size eight with bead heads. So I had to make do with my Wal-Mart specials.
Couple of things first....I didn't have a hook hone with me and those hooks were pretty good but could use a couple of strokes. As I was pinching down the barb I noticed how soft the hooks were...a quick look at the package confirmed that they were made in England. I'm not sure they would hold up to a lotta large fish. Anybody have any idea why the hooks were so soft?? Anyway, after all the comments about Costco gas I filled up at Wal-Mart and headed out to the basin. Water temp was 46 degrees same as two weeks ago. Cloudy weather will do that to a lake I guess. Fishing was slower than two weeks ago....had really difficult time hooking fishing and holding fish. Not sure if it was the hooks, the fish, or me. Did spend about a hour fussing with chromidids. Caught two on a bead head fly...not sure what fly it was...it came with that "deal from Orvis..12 flies plus a wallet". Light green, gold bead head, with a "goose" wing down on the hook side. All this in a size 14. Now I barely can fish chromidids so it might have been worthwhile to stick with it...but I had a friend that needed to catch some fish. So we went back to the Woolley Buggers. I landed 12 fish and had a similar number do a self release, plus two or three times that number with missed hook sets. I did have three or four fish that were fouled hook and I'm wondering if they were just slapping at it. I had great fun fishing...my friend was frustrated with the missed hook sets and self releases...but its about fishing not catching....right?
