Well, with the pontoon, I do most of my traveling backwards, and since the 
motor's in the back, and the boat is so short and laterally unstable as it is, 
it seemed (as an old Volvo commercial once said) "better to pull a car than to 
push it".

But I think I'll turn the motor unit back around and live with 3 speeds 
backwards, so I can utilize the sidefinder part of the fishfinder's transducer. 
 Either that, or make some sort of mount on the body or frame of the boat to 
mount the transducer.  Still noodling this one.
