Apple remote access

Help please. A friend's iMac on 8.6 connected by modem drops out 
often within seconds of connecting. The connection is usually @ 
37000. 'Apple Remote Access, You have Been Disconnected'

Is it a phone line problem or a setting???
any help appreciated.
