(in 10.3.3 - don't think all these options were available in prior versions of
the OS)

Firstly you must enable a screen saver

If you don't want the saver to start unless you wish to have the screen locked
then set the timer to "never"

Enable a "hot corner" - say top left

The screen will then blank out only when you place the cursor there

To make this password protected, enable the option "require password to wake
computer or sleep"
that is a checkbox in the security pane of System preferences

When leaving the computer it will be left happily working away password
protected by placing the cursor in the top left corner. If you selected "5
minutes" instead of "never" (as the screen saver" this will happen automatically

This is a good way to password protect your laptop if you put it to sleep
before you take it somewhere. The computer won't wake up without the password
and even goes to sleep again quickly if you don't type anything ! (can save
battery power if the laptop unlatches itself...)
