Incidentally, iPhoto will happily accept these files from the
camera and export them as TIFFS. However, only the thumbnail is
available within iPhoto so they will not enlarge properly in iPhoto.
sorry missed this last point - to ACTUALLY use and take advantage
of the RAW format to any extent at all you have to use a program
that USES the RAW data and not the appended TIFF - Photoshop can't
deal with RAW data in any way and just ignores (but keeps) it as
file meta-data (unless Photoshop CS now includes it) such a program
would have come on a CD with your camera or there are several
other ones that will do the job as well if not better.
In the end I selected a camera that doesn't do RAW images so the
pre purchase research is all I know about actually using RAW data
in post processing
