Dear Wamuggers
A report in the most recent School Matters publicises the achievements
of DET ICT programs including the Notebooks for Teachers Program and
high-speed internet access. It describes schools operating hardware
through a local server, which has limitations with IT equipment ageing
and technology and learning processes becoming more complex.
The report identifies the limitations of inadequate infrastructure
documentation and lack of standards across the system, resulting in
equipment that DET support staff and other schools find hard to work
with.
"In the interest of improving learning opportunities for students, DET
aims to phase out the myriad different computers used in schools, along
with individual servers."
The report progresses to the statement that "a uniformity of computers
and software would ensure fast, efficient in-house support services,
better product quality and lower maintenance costs for schools."
