Interestingly, if you flip that question around and ask "How many songs fit on my phone?", the answer is no more than 100 (regardless of size/bit rate) even though 100 songs should only take about 400Mb. Why?

I expect it's Apple's response to the phone networks/Motorola insisting that you be able to download music to the phone directly (ie not using iTunes). I'm not sure if Apple still gets a cut of the profits from that.
