Interestingly, if you flip that question around and ask "How many
songs fit on my phone?", the answer is no more than 100 (regardless
of size/bit rate) even though 100 songs should only take about
400Mb.
Why?

playback on the phone so even if your 100 tracks have used only
350MB of the card's capacity, you can't add more."

I expect it's Apple's response to the phone networks/Motorola
insisting that you be able to download music to the phone directly
(ie not using iTunes). I'm not sure if Apple still gets a cut of the
profits from that.
