Well, some aspects annoy me too but...

One assumes iLife 06 will be with us sometime soon.

Nothing else will work with iMovie and iDVD as well...

If it is speed consider using iPhoto Buddy and/or use the
"0", "1" and "2" shortcuts while in thumbnail mode to speed
up display (as they are the "native" sizes and anything else
needs to be rendered on the fly)

I wouldn't change from iPhoto now for storage of my personal
photos no matter what because of its ease of use (for my partner,
mother etc.) but I do use Graphic Converter for specialised tasks...
