I know this will sound like sacrilege to some but is the a better photo storing and managing application, including a browser, than iPhoto? I have 3500 photos stored on it already but some of its little quirks annoy me.

Depends exactly what you are after a Database or Editing platform many options for each.

I personally use GraphicConverter to view and do minor modifications or file conversions. I use RAW a lot and use this program to open files then convert for application as it updates regularly. It allows file, directory or even whole hard-drive of images to be opened and searched in many ways. It does come as part of some hardware purchases from Apple.

Database option many available cost and machinery to set-up in accordance with your requirements. But, Extensis or what ever they are called now have an option which I believe is fairly good and allows to be expanded upon when the need arises. Known as Portfolio, I am sure with a bit of researching other options are available. I use a web based system with MySQL and PHP on local servers for studio and a internet version under construction.
