Hi Rosemary,
Sounds like you are not the only person having trouble with this
since update to 10.4.3 & also iTunes 6.0.1
I would download the 10.4.3 Combo updater and use it to reinstall
10.4.3 on top of your current Software Update installation.
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1043combo.html>
I would also repair permissions after running the combo.
Cheers,
Ronni

I've tried your trash extension and re-start.
I've also tried resetting.
I put in on charge all last night
I can't see it in Disk Utility to Mount, but I can see it in System
Profiler!
Whatever I do, screen still says "do not disconnect"
Ugh!!

My 20gb ipod that's been working fine now isn't. When I plug it
into my powerbook (1.67 Ghz, Powerpc G4 running Mac os x 10.4.3),
it's screen changed to "Do not disconnect" but no ipod mounted in
itunes or finder. I've tried resetting but the screen seems to be
locked on "Do not disconnect". I've got the last ipod updater
(2005-11-17) and the latest itunes.(itunes 6.0.1)
Any ideas?

Hi Rosemary,
You could try: Open disk utility and see if you can mount the
ipod from there.
I found this in Apple discussions: trash the extension
"iPodDriver.kext" and restart your mac. The ipod was then able to
mount automatically.
This is the location of this extension:
/System/Library/Extensions/iPodDriver.kext
