Hi all,

I have a friend who has signed up for ADSL plus with iinet and been supplied with a belkin wireless router and he's having trouble getting started.

He is using a new laptop with 10.4 which he uses at school where they use airport in all classrooms so he has used it before. He expected since iinet said the router came configured that it would be simple to plug and go but nothing.

So he has used airport at school but has he ever set a connection up at home ?

Assuming that the exchange connections have been made ready ,
have the necessary line filters been installed to isolate all phones from the ADSL
part of the line .
If not, it's highly probable that the exchange senses the situation
and has switched out the adsl .

We don't know the model of Router , but it should have some leds to indicate
line and wireless condition.

The Router should have been configured with login name and password to connect to ISP .
Need to find the location in the Router software to check that .

If it has been set correctly ,
then by configuring his network settings correctly
he should be able to use the ethernet connection to connect to the internet .

When that is all Ok , then wireless router has a chance of working,
but there should be wireless login name and password in laptop,
to allow it to connect to Router .

That should be a few starting points which may get him going.

Oh, and also , some routers have a software setting to turn the wireless access off ,
so need to check that is turned on.

He has logged in to the router using ethernet and the message he gets is 'line not up'

can anyone help please as i know nothing about wireless. [anyone happy to accept a call from him to talk him through would be a magic bonus]

thanks

Yvonne
