Yvonne, I've had three or four modem/routers with broadband and recently received the same unit your friend has.
I had the same problem and did the opposite to what Tobes suggested - I rang iinet support. Yes, there was a Q waiting to be answered, but they were very professional about stepping through each potential problem. In the end they determined the modem was faulty and I got a replacement. They DO enter all your details into the modem before sending it, and mine had not saved it properly - sounds the same as your friends. The other thing is that they always send the routers out with wireless disabled. He could try connecting via ethernet cable to the back of the modem and see if he gets the same error message. However if he can connect that way then he needs to go into the router at 10.1.1.1 password admin. On the left hand select advanced setup and go down to Wireless then click Enable.
