Monitor distress

Help!  The power button on my 17" Apple monitor has suddenly started  
blinking in a regular pattern - like a Morse code 'u' - dot dot dash  
- and the monitor is distinctly darker at the bottom.

Using G4 tower, dual 1.42 Gh, OSX 10.4.6.
Does this indicate that the monitor is about to fail?  Is there  
anything I can do about it except let it happen?
