Thanks Susan,

So does that mean I can use the single Ethernet outlet on the cable modem that I understand Telstra will supply, and plug it into my existing a spare
ethernet port on my 4 port + wireless modem?

Alternately , will your existing modem / wireless Router work on the Telstra cable ?

So what is the existing Modem / wireless router make and model number ?

Bob.

I'm guess I'm wondering if the existing modem will only distribute
wirelessly on input coming from the ADSL line in, or whether it will find the internet connection on one of the other ethernet ports (coming from the
cable modem) and distribute it wirelessly.

Hi, the wireless network is within your own home, so that part
depends on you, not Telstra. If their cable modem does not have
wireless, you would need to get a wireless router as well as the
cable modem, and it doesn't really matter if you use a Mac wireless
router or a generic one, they all work with Macs and PCs regardless.
cheers, Susan.

Hi,

I know there is another thread about Broadband running at the
moment, but
I'd like to ask about experience with Telstra's Cable Broadband
when it's
actually working and installed.

I'm currently happy with iinet DSL/VOIP/4gb plan with a wireless 4
port
modem, but got the same tempting phone call others seem to be
getting too.
Unlike Stewart, we DO have cable in our street and have had Foxtel
via cable
in the past, so in theory won't be led up the garden path with
promises of
something they cannot deliver.

The spiel talked about 8Mb per second. Is that correct or is it the
more
DSLAM like 1mb/sec on a good day?

The Telstra website say they do not support wireless Mac setups,
yet others
seem to have their Powerbooks running on cable broadband.

Currently I have the iinet 4 port wireless modem connected to my
ADSL phone
line and one ethernet cable running from the modem to a 6 way ethernet
switch that supports up to 4 computers running OS9, XP Pro, Win98,
and OSX.
I connect my Powerbook via the wireless connection on the modem.

Is this setup likely to work with Cable Broadband?

The only reason I'm thinking of changing is that I might be able to
save a
bit on the package, but they don't offer VOIP, nor much disk space.
On the
up side, I might be able to include Foxtel for not much more than I'm
currently paying. But will it all work with my Mac centric network
or will
it be more headache than it's worth???

Thanks
Tim
