I wrote to Nikon re. .NEF files, this was their response...
Dear Michael,
This has been transferred to the Nikon Support section as we are best
able to
handle this type of question.
The Nikon software provided with all the cameras alloows all NEF files to be
saved as either a TIFF or JPG. Please refer to the Reference Manual CD for a
detailed how to export the images in the formats you require.
It offers basic editing features as does several other programs that are out
there, eg Adobe CS2 with the Camera Raw.
Nikon don't provide the full editing program, Capture NX, as from experience
it is better to not have a cover price for all users as our competitor does
when only about 5% of all DSLR users use Raw images.
The cost of NX is a low $249 RRP if people do want it to compliment Adobe
Photoshop or even take the place of most functions CS2 offer. It is a far
more powerfull raw editor then CS2 can offer.
Please note
For any further questions please use the Ask a Question on our web site at
this link.
http://nikonasia-en.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nikonasia_en.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php
The main reason is it logs the questions and responses into a searchable
database and makes response from us much more effective.

Hi Severin & Mark,
I cannot remember where I found this information some time ago. It might
be relevant or not.
Yes, It appears Nikon encrypts its white balance information in NEF files.
I read this about a work around that involves opening your photo twice
into Photoshop.
First open the RAW file and do your conversions/settings.
Leave the converted RAW file open in Photoshop and open it a second time
from iPhoto except this time tell it to use JPEG.
In Photoshop you'll now have two files open of the same image. Drag the
converted RAW image from its window to the JPEG image (that iPhoto
created originally). This effectively replaces the JPEG with your
converted RAW (in a new layer). Flatten the JPEG image and save it.
Since this JPEG was created by iPhoto in its library, it will now be
updated in iPhoto.
Just close your converted RAW image without saving.
Cheers,
Ronni

I can't say for the 5700 but I belive Nikon, for a period of time,
decided it would "proprietorise" its RAW format - encrypting it so
that you couldn't use 3rd party RAW converters - only their $200'ish
"Nikon Capture" program - a chronically short sighted move by
anyone's reckoning.
I don't know if they ever ended up allowing third party developers to
access those NEF's but I've got a friend who owns several Nikons and
for one of them he simply can't use anything other than Nikon'$ "Nikon
Capture" program
I have a Nikon Coolpix 5700 which shoots in the Nikon RAW format
.NEF. I believe that the .NEF files produced by this camera and
others of its vintage are different from .NEF or .RAW files from
later Nikon cameras.
iPhoto will not recognise this format, nor will it recognise .dng to
which these files can be converted while retaining the raw data.
Recognise is the wrong word to use here, it recognises the files and
tries to read them then subsequently comes up with an error message.
Photoshop and all the Adobe products are happy with my .NEF raw files.
Is there a way to doctor or convert these so that iPhoto can
recognise them? Aperture has the same list of recognisable RAW
files as iPhoto.
I like to use iPhoto to store and catalog all my photos and in a RAW
format would be ideal. Currently I have to preprocess them for
iPhoto and return to the RAW data source later, a duplication of
storage apart from anything else.
