best is get info about midi, there are a number of keybaords available that have a usb port for midi in/out & you can get sophisticated midi record/edit/play software (eg finale, band in a box) or just "el chipo" the quicktime player in the audio/midi setup there you "connect" the keyboard to the osx for control though the installed software if your friend needs good sound quality he has to spend more money (> $700.-) for a keyboard and then set the software to play back through the keyboard & connect an amp & speakers to the keyboard
 cheers James

Hi all, a friend who is a professional composer and musician is looking at buying a keyboard to use with a Mac, and we were wondering if anyone has ideas or experience with using a keyboard, partly for ease of input into musical scores with Finale or Sebelius, but also wants a keyboard that is playable as a stand alone. cheers, Susan.
