Hi Rosie, Yes my Intel CoreDuo iMac does the same. After compressing about 6 hours of video, done in impressive time, it got very hot. So far however it has not decided to use it's fans. I hope it is not cooking the screen.
I'd like to plumb the hot air off to dry fruit, but thats probably just me.
