Thanks Peter, with Cmd V I get this:

[... Unix startup messages]
CSRHIDTransitionProcess ... done

Syncing disks ... killing all processes

continuing
done
CPUhalted
(and then it shuts off).

It will boot into Single User mode with Cmd S - but after using an
exit, it goes back to original behavior.
