I had problems with the drfivers for a Canon Multi Functional
Scanner / Printer
that seemed to cause this problem .
It stopped working so now I have separate Epson scanner and Brother
printer and no problem

You could try this:
Set an aggressive sleep time of a few minutes, have a look at
Activity Monitor and see if there are 3rd party background
processes for peripherals that you can eliminate. Eliminate one
and see if it goes to sleep.
Repeat till it sleeps as that should be the offending process.
If that process launches through your user's login items, maybe it
doesn't have to.
Another place to look would be in the offending application's
preferences.

Energy saver is set to put displays to sleep after 7 mins

Additionally the disks are set to sleep whenever possible.
If I walk away from the computer it never goes properly to
sleep, the red light always shows in my USB mouse which will
bring the display back to life with a mouse movement and I can
hear the disks running.
Mail is set to check every 15 mins, Degrees Down Under
refreshes every 10 mins and Skype usually shows me online. I
believe Activity monitor should lead me to what is preventing
full sleep but am unable to interpret what I see. This is not
a vital matter but I would like to understand what is going on,
comments much appreciated.
