In case of interest to anyone, the outcome of this problem of mine is
that the fourth point on the page which Travis pointed to, ie ...
http://www.apple.com/au/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate
.. also applied. I didn't look closely enough, but the battery had
started to expand. What prompted a closer look was the clicking
section of my track pad suddenly become hard to click, and generally
hard to use. I hadn't noticed any gradual deterioration because I
usually have a mouse and external keyboard plugged in. Turns out the
swelling of the battery pack was interfering with the ability to click
in the track pad.
So, if the clicker on your laptop's trackpad is giving you grief,
check the battery.
A new battery's been ordered from Apple at no cost to me, so can't
complain.

Must be close to exhaustive Travis. Thanks.
A note at this page <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1359?viewlocale=en_US
> says ...
"Note: Updated versions of Mac OS X like 10.4.11 and 10.5 will show
the batteryupdater.bundle as version 1.3. This is normal and does
not indicate the wrong update was installed on the computer. When
running the newer OS version, the battery will be automatically
updated to the proper update if one has not previously been
installed."
My batteryupdater.bundle file does show 1.3. But I find this note a
little ambiguous. Is it saying then that I don't need to do an
update? I assume so. Anyway, I've emailed an Apple service centre
and explained the problem, pointing them to that page about
replacement qualifications. I seem to fall into the third bullet
point category, with a cycle count of 274.
Thanks Diane for the link to Entourage scripts.

Steve,
This is a very common problem.
There's heaps to try:
Calibrate battery (as James said):
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2339.html
Battery Firmware update:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Battery_Update_1_2 (depending on
your model)
See if you qualify for new battery:
http://www.apple.com/au/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
Check battery for "bulging" - Read this WAMUG thread from 29 Jan 09:
MacBook Pro Battery Warning (finished one)
This list is probably not exhaustive. Good luck.
cheers
