-- In Google Earth, at the bottom of the 'Places' section, is a box marked 'Bathymetry'. It is this box which turns the land-blackening off or on. The 'Ocean' box was just a red herring -- it brings up features about the ocean, not the depth soundings. -- I still don't know how 'Bathymetry' got to be turned on, I never even knew the box was there.
