Hi Ronni
The DVD-VHS combo recorder is a Panasonic DMR-EZ47V and behaves like a set top box as well up to standard digital. Toast would seem to be a way to go except that I would have to upgrade from my old 5.2.1! Thank you for clarifying the file types and explaining their characteristics, and for the precise instructions if I go down the Toast path.

Hi Merv,

Is this from a Philips Brand DVD Recorder?
With Phillips recorded DVD's you don't get two folders as in VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS like you do on a normal DVD. You get two folders called ...VIDEO_TS (like normal) and VIDEO_RM (the RM folder contains DAT files, IFO files, and VIDEO_RM.BUP files).

From what I understand the RM files are only for navigation on a Set Top DVD Recorder or DVD Recorder with built-in Hard Drive.

From: <http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/video_rm.cfm>

"Folders found in a DVD file structure can often contain a legacy folder called VIDEO_RM. Essentially, this folder is rather useless to most set-top DVD players as it is a folder referenced on Philips brand DVD recorders as well as Philips clones. For reasons unknown, Philips decided not to abide by standards of DVD file structures and used this VIDEO_RM folder to hold information about the recording device a DVD was created on.

The folder, when viewed through several DVD re-authoring tools will show that it is useless much in the same way an AUDIO_TS folder is."

If you have Toast 8 or Toast 10 you could convert the files(the files in the VIDEO_TS folder) to DV Stream that iMovie will accept.
1 At the left side of the Toast window, click Video and choose DVDVideo.
2 Drag & Drop the VIDEO_TS folder into the Content Area
3 Select the files in the list
4 Click Export at the bottom of the Toast window, or choose Disc >
   Export Video.
5 Choose the Format to convert to.
DV: Creates a standard definition DV file that can be used with iDVD and iMovie. DV 16:9: Creates a widescreen DV file that can be imported into iDVD and iMovie.
6 Enter a name and choose the location to export to.
7 Click Save.
Toast displays a progress bar and status information as it exports the video.

Cheers,
Ronni

Further to my earlier posting one of my troublesome DVD recordings has the following folders:
VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS
The first has files: The second has files:
VIDEO_RM.BUP VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_RM.DAT VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_RM.IFO VTS_01_O.BUP
                        VTS_01_O.IFO
                        VTS_01_1.VOB
                        VTS_01_2.VOB
                        VTS_01_3.VOB
                        VTS_01_4.VOB
Neither the folders nor the files are accepted by iMovie or iDVD.
A search of forums suggests the use of Handbrake to convert to mpeg or some other such format. I would like to separate the episodes and edit out unwanted film at the beginnings and ends, if iMovie will allow this after achieving a codex from Handbrake that iMovie will accept, and then burn the result on a new DVD that can be used on any DVD player. Is Handbrake likely to be the intermediate program that will allow importing to iMovie.
This is all a new landscape for me.
Cheers

I have a combo VHS-DVD recorder connected to my TV set.
On a standard DVD-R I can record up to 4.7 GB. Most one-off programs use less than half of the disk and if I don't "Finish" the disk I can put on two programs - but then it won't "Finish" the disk which means I can't play the DVD on any other DVD player. If I "Finish" after recording the first program then that prevents any further recording on the disk.
Is there a work around for this matter?
Suggestions appreciated.
