Sorry to hear you had a problem with this update Andrew.
I downloaded and installed the update early this morning without any
problems on my 3G S iPhone.
I did backup & sync my iPhone first, BEFORE hitting "Check for Update".
It took an hour to download the update (Apple Servers obviously very
busy) & then a long time to install & reboot.
But, all went without any problems.
