Marlene, Have you tried a USB microphone?
Have you plugged the microphone you have in then gone to System Preferences > Sound and selected the device in "Input"? Gone to System Preferences > Speech, selected the microphone in the drop down menu located just below "settings Commands " and pressed "Calibrate" and the calibrated the microphone?
