Hi Graeme After you have created the chart, whilst the chart is the active window, choose File > Save Graphic File ... (rather than File > Save As, which you appear to have done, which gives you the boxchart suffix).
From the window which displays, choose pdf as the file format, then click Save. This should then generate your pdf file.
