I'm using the latest versions of all the software. I admit I have not applied the 10.7.1 update, but I do have Numbers 2.1. When I was using the converted Excel file, I was certainly making changes to the file: changing column widths, renaming creating header rows, etc. At no time did I try to save the file, but then I noticed also that the dark dot never appeared in the red close button at the top left of the screen (indicating a changed document). I'll do some experimenting this weekend in the light of your and Ronni's advice (I don't get the time through the week).
