Adrian, Checking the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard disk with Disk Utility. (Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility.app)
Disk drives you use with your computer can include S.M.A.R.T. hardware that tests and monitors the drive continuously for potential problems and failures. You can check the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard disks in Disk Utility. S.M.A.R.T stands for Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology. If the S.M.A.R.T. status for a disk shows "Verified," nothing is wrong with it. If you see "About to Fail" in red letters, you should back up the disk and replace it as soon as possible. In Disk Utility, select a hard disk in the list of disks and volume. Look at the bottom of the window for the S.M.A.R.T. Status. If you want continual indication of your HD status then I recommend that you download and install Smartreporter <http://www.corecode.at/smartreporter/> and check the icon it puts in your menubar. If that icon changes from green to red it's high time to do a full backup before replacing the HD.
