I like Firefox because of various extensions I use with it particularly
Adblock and Flashblock which cuts out a lot of the visual advertorial
pollution on many sites.

With Flashblock you just get an icon everywhere there would be flash content
and if you actually want to see the flash content (say a relevant video you
want to see) you just click on the icon to enable that particular flash
item. I would think that Flashblock could greatly reduce the Firefox
CPU/memory drain.

To put it in context, on my iMac (late 2009, i7, only 4GB RAM) I currently
have running:
> * Adobe Photoshop Elements
> * Adobe InDesign
> * Firefox
> * Entourage
> * Preview
> * Calculator
> * Activity monitor
I would also typically open up Word, Safari, Excel without feeling the need
to shut anything down.

Currently, Firefox has 3 open windows with a total of over 20 tabs open.
When researching something, I frequently have more tabs open. As all the
tabs are fully loaded and I am using Entourage (to write this) Activity
monitor is showing my CPU hogs ;o) are:
> 4.8% activitymonitord
> 3.5% Firefox
> 2.8% Indesign
> 1.8% Entourage
> 0.9% PS Elements
> 0.9% Activity monitor
Obviously these figures ramp up as I start using the programs and Firefox
can certainly get up there when using it a lot. Occasionally, I do find I
overload Firefox when I have multiple windows each with many tabs Firefox
starts to get VERY sluggish and will eventually come to a virtual
standstill. However, a restart of Firefox and a culling of some of the
excess tabs will soon bring it back in line ;o)

So, if you actually prefer Firefox, check out the Flashblock extension.

By the way, I also use Safari for certain sites typically a few that don¹t
play nicely with my locked down Firefox.

Horses for courses.

Just my 2c worth ;o)

Cheers
