Actually, the parting of the Red Sea is grounded in scientific fact. A severe earthquake can easily cause water to flow out to sea, exposing land that normally is underwater. Check out the Alaskan earthquake in `64 and what it did to the bay.
People were lured out to the water's edge because the water left and was gone for a long time ... when it came back, lots of folks were drowned.
