Usually in NC, Sheriff is a County office. I remember them saying once - "Whoever sits in that chair is the only law west of Mt. Pilot." I also remember them saying "That's out of our jurisdiction. That's way over in Stokes County..." Usually, towns have a Police Chief or something of the sort......Could it be that Mayberry and Mayberry County were so small that the Sheriff was sort of a defacto Police Chief but since he covered the whole County they called him Sheriff. Anyway, he had to cover more than just the Town or Barney could not have gone way out on Route 6 to catch speeders.... I may be paraphrasing the quotes above, but they seem to indicate that Andy's jurisdiction covers the "County." Although, they are not conclusive. I think this was discussed before, wasn't it?
