Usually in NC, Sheriff is a County office. I remember them saying once  - 
"Whoever sits in that chair is the only law west of Mt. Pilot."   I  also 
remember them saying "That's out of our jurisdiction. That's way over in  
Stokes 
County..." Usually, towns have a Police Chief or something of the  
sort......Could 
it be that Mayberry and Mayberry County were so small that the  Sheriff was 
sort of a defacto Police Chief but since he covered the whole County  they 
called him Sheriff. Anyway, he had to cover more than just the Town or  Barney 
could not have gone way out on Route 6 to catch speeders....
 
I may be paraphrasing the quotes above, but they seem to indicate  that 
Andy's jurisdiction covers the "County." Although, they are not conclusive.  I 
think this was discussed before, wasn't it?
