Congrats are in order for former Columbia resident Mitch Jayne, who - along with his bandmates in The Dillards - will be inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame on Oct. 1, the International Bluegrass Music Association announced today.(Aug. 13th)
The 79-year-old Jayne - also an accomplished storyteller and novelist - now lives in the southern Missouri float-trip arcadia of Eminence, about an hour south of Salem, where the band got its start in the early '60s before heading to L.A. Not long after arriving on the West Coast, The Dillards landed the gig for which they're likely most remembered: playing the fictional band The Darlings on "The Andy Griffith Show" and thus bringing bluegrass more into the mainstream. The Dillards' impact, however, has proved to be much more wide-reaching. Along with the early practitioners of the Bakersfield sound, they paved the way - after getting a rise out of bluegrass purists by plugging in and going electric - for artists of the country rock (Gram Parsons, the Byrds, the Eagles) and newgrass (the Seldom Scene, Ricky Skaggs) varieties who themselves became major influences during the alt-country heyday in the '90s. The Hall of Fame inductions will take place during the IBMA Awards on Oct. 1 at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The Hall itself is housed in the International Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro, Ky. http://www.columbiatribune.com/weblogs/cool-dry-place/2009/aug/13/former-col umbian-jayne-to-enter-bluegrass-hall-wit/ Vern _______________________________________________ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
