In almost every episode of TAGS, the license plate on the squadcar is JL-327,
but in two or three early episodes, it is DC-269. Later the DC-269 tag can be
spotted on other vehicles around town. Another one that turned up many times
was AY-321, which if memory serves appeared on Otis' car, and later Aunt Bee's.

All of that is fairly common knowledge, but I'll bet almost none of you knows
this next part: Back around 1959 or 1960, there was a tire company that
published a full-color magazine ad which included fifty real license plates,
one from each state. Or maybe there were just 48, but anyway, in this ad the
license plate for North Carolina was JL-327. Obviously, someone in the DesiLu
prop department came across this ad and used it to create the prop license
plate for the squad car. That way, they could be certain they had the right
colors and the right grouping of numbers and letters. A fine example of the
extra effort they took to make everything look authentic. Credit goes to Jack
Fellenzer, who discovered the aforementioned advertisement many years ago.
