We use homenetwork cards that run through the existing phone lines.  I am
able to get 10/100 speed so file transferrs are no real problem.  Axion is
the company I bought them from and they cost around 10 dollars a card (one
card per computer).  Total cost 40 bucks

If you are wanting the laps to be mobile, then using a wireless router with
pcmcia cards would be the solution.  A bridge may be necessary if the house
provides interferance to the signal. Total cost around 300 if you shop
right.
