sggh, Jan, Michael and Eddie, Thank you all for advice and links. The Meyer version is probably the nearest to what I want, but I am a)not confident enough on css (though learning) and b) see limitations which my page imposes as I have it presently designed.
Following Michael's comments I might as well use javascripet with the visible menu linking to pages anyway (if that makes sense on a Sunday). I am impressed Jan and Eddie and the day might come when I am able to be so sophisticated!
