The last virus I had (my first in six years, and only three weeks after
re-installing windows!) came through Java, I can only assume it was a
dud website or something.

Not a problem.  My ideal solution would be "Install Linux", but I now
realise that not everyone is ready for that.  As I mentioned the other
day, if you are thinking about swapping from windows to something else,
try Knoppix.net and download/run the live CD - it's linux without
affecting your hard-disk.
