I did the same thing for a current client. I placed "Site modified and cart by <fill in the blank>" and the previous designer's credit without a hyperlink.
We will be doing a complete redesign at some point in the future after all new product shots are taken, and then the previous designers credit will be removed completely On another site since another graphic designer designed the logo the customer uses I gave him credit.
