If they're insistent on using the photo then why not try the Windows Vista-style design? I think Microsoft have hired some half-decent designers as their Vista site is actually really nice visually.

For your project I'm referring specifically to the Vista start page: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/ although I prefer one of the earlier versions with clouds and soft water instead of that meadow-based young lady.

You'll need a high-quality, crisp image to work with to pull this off, but it's a good start anyway. Furthermore I'd really try and push them into dropping the image for a common site background or at least restricting it to a smaller header strip.

In my opinion it'll make their image look a thousand bucks, plus it'll get the "ooh we look like Microsoft, so that MUST mean we're fantastic" mentality going (which is a nice trick to remember to get design-oblivious or awkward clients happy in a hurry).
