David, below is the diagnostic log - it has just happened again. I have sent the log by email out of the machine across the world and back to the other machine, which is on the same switch. The connection to the ISP itself is obviously working, but none of the browsers seem to hold their concentration! - Nor does IE diagnostic appear to know how OE does it... Don'cha just love M$.

My Dell Inspiron 1300 likes sending and downloading mail via
broadband, indeed almost chortles with delight. However after a short time [hours to a day] it yawns and ignores all requests to
access webpages, pretending a cable is unplugged, even while it
merrily downloads, uploads and investigates mail.

When it does this, can you still ping IPs, and resolve hostnames?

If you can ping IPs but not hostnames, then you have some kind of DNSproblems.

When your browsers stop being able to access pages, what errors do they give you?
