oops, I was on an old Safari 3.x so it failed to launch. Now it works.
But why Safari is required to be installed as prerequisite? Could you please
explain a little more?

The Windows WebKit nightly builds require Safari 5.1 to be installed.

Many of the concepts in the Windows WebKit API map directly to the Mac WebKit
API, so the documentation and samples on developer.apple.com should be useful.
And the WinLauncher project in the WebKit source tree is a good example
application that uses WebKit on Windows.
