instead of reverse-engineering initargs.  The latter would be more
reliable especially if the values change outside the defview form.

As for the rationale, it is a primitive version of MOP's
`compute-effective-slot-definition', which takes the new and inherited
direct slots and builds an effective slot.  The difference is that CESD
has more strategies than direct value override: for example, initargs
and accessors are combined.  See CLHS 7.5.3 for details.  Of course,
those defining their own methods on CESD and `compute-slots' may have
their own combination strategies to apply.
